THE STORY
Circumstances
At 9.10am on 20 May, as they were coming out of a shooting session, officers from the French national police force noticed a Renault van with one of its doors apparently forced open and a faulty number plate. Thinking they were dealing with a stolen vehicle, the police officers attempted to carry out a control.
Inside the Renault Trafic, 5 thugs were preparing to commit a robbery and were heavily armed. The van, which had stopped at a red light, suddenly took off again along the D1 departmental road that runs through the town of Créteil. A chase ensued on the A86 and A4 motorways. The criminals did not hesitate to throw fire extinguishers at the pursuing vehicle. All the national police units were alerted by radio.
At the Champigny-sur-Marne tunnel, a CRS crew slowed down to stop the van. The gangsters made their determination known by coming out equipped with machine guns. They fired in a hail of bullets at the police vehicle. One police officer and three road users were injured. The pursuit ended.
At around 9.45 am, the van took exit 8 off the Autoroute de l'Est. But at the first roundabout, on Boulevard de Friedberg in Villiers-sur-Marne, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Hyundai. They were immobilised, but reacted quickly by setting fire to their van. Witnesses to the scene told the municipal police that an accident had just occurred. However, as in many towns, the municipal police do not use the same radio frequencies as the national police. This lack of coordinated information was to be the main cause of the terrible tragedy that followed.
Aurélie Fouquet and Thierry Moreau, police officers for Villiers-sur-Marne, were directed to the accident, which was far from ordinary. Seeing that some vehicles were indeed on fire, they parked their service car about thirty metres away to mark out the scene and avoid an accident.
The police officers barely had time to get out of their vehicle before they were fired upon in a hail of bullets. At man height. To kill.
The emergency vehicle was riddled with dozens of bullet holes. Fortunately, this municipal police unit is equipped with firearms, which will probably save the life of Aurélie's team-mate. Initially, she tried to return fire, but was hit in the head and chest. Thierry Moreau, despite being shot in the shoulder, returned fire five timesBouleversant and even had to retrieve his partner's gun. A mobster is wounded and the commando flees, leaving behind some of their war material: explosive frames, grenades...
Their trail was lost in Noisy-le-Grand (93), on the other side of the A.4, when a second stolen car, a blood-stained Mercedes, was abandoned.
The various shootings during this criminal escapade left 6 people injured.
