THE STORY
Circumstances
Serge Attard and François Asquoest are out on patrol in a neighbourhood in the south of the commune where several villas have recently been burgled.
A man behaving strangely caught the attention of the two officers. Jean-Claude Pelletier, aged 41, was a vagrant carrying several bags.
The officers had a brief exchange with him and asked him to move along. The man grumbled and walked away. Nothing to worry about. But he finally plunges his hand into one of his bags and aims at the police officers: a bolt of lightning flashes through the canvas.
Serge is hit by a shotgun blast and collapses. The man threatens François Asquoest when the latter manages to fire back twice with his service weapon. He shot the thug dead. A few hours later, Serge, a married father of two, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
