On the night of 17 June 2020, Detective Garda Horkan responded to a call for assistance from his uniform colleagues in the Knockroe Area of Castlerea. The nature of the call was two males driving erratically on a motorcycle but were gone from the area upon the arrival of Detective Garda Horkan. Detective Garda Horkan continued to patrol the area and came across two males fitting the description on Main Street, Castlerea. Detective Garda Horkan stopped the patrol car and spoke with the males, one of whom he knew. The other male became extremely aggressive towards him and Detective Garda Horkan attempted to arrest him. This male violently resisted arrest and a struggle ensued. The male managed to take possession of Detective Garda Horkan’s personal issue firearm. He then intentionally discharged a number of shots from the firearm fatally injuring Detective Garda Horkan.
