Jeremiah Desmond McCabe (53)

On June 7, 1996, Detective Garda McCabe and a colleague were escorting a postal service truck on cash delivery duty in Adare, Co. Limerick. Shortly before 7 a.m., the truck stopped in Adare and the patrol car stopped nearby. As the truck driver was unloading the mail, a makeshift IRA unit in a jeep plowed into the rear of the patrol car at full speed. Within seconds, five other gang members arrived on the scene in another vehicle and opened fire on the patrol car, killing Detective Garda McCabe and seriously injuring Detective Garda O'Sullivan.
