THE STORY
Circumstances
On 13.10.1980 the colleague Quaid and one the colleague Donal Lyttleton carried out investigations to some bank robberies. Late that evening, they stopped a van driven by a member of the Provisional IRA at Ballyconnick Quarry near Cleariestown. The driver lived in the area and was from Belfast. When the officers went to search the van, in which explosives were found, the driver suddenly pulled out a gun. He demanded the two officers let him go and fired one shot. Quaid, a colleague, drew his weapon and an exchange of gunfire ensued. Colleague Quaid was fatally wounded in the incident.
