He died on July 29, as a result of injuries sustained in a shooting with three criminals, founding members of the so-called "Banda della Uno Bianca" on October 3, 1987 on the A14 motorway at the Cesena tollbooth. For some time a merchant from Rimini had been undergoing extortion requests. The man reported everything to the Rimini Police and a group of police officers, led by superintendent Antonio Mosca, organized a service to capture the criminals. According to the phone call from the extortionists, the entrepreneur's car should have taken the A14 motorway, stopping at every overpass and when he saw a rope dangling he should have tied a briefcase containing fifty million lire. The agents, aboard the entrepreneur's Fiat Panda and an Alfa 33, arrived under the overpass but were greeted with dozens of shotgun shots exploded by bandits posted on the overpass and in the ditch along the highway. Moscow and two other agents were seriously injured while one of the unharmed agents returned fire by piercing the jacket of one of the bandits who, however, managed to escape with his accomplices. Superintendent Antonio Mosca was hit by five buckshot in the chest and one in the head. A slow hospital ordeal began for him, during which two lobes of his right lung were removed and which ended only on 29 July 1989 with his death. The escaped criminals were three brothers, two of them police officers. Later they welcomed into their group three other corrupt agents with whom they committed numerous crimes. During their criminal career, which ended with their arrest by the Rimini Commissariat in November 1994, they killed 24 people and injured 102 others. One of the policemen who arrested them was the only officer left unharmed in the shooting on the A14 motorway. the one who had pierced the vest of one of the bandits with a bullet.
