The colleague Fritz Otto died on 01.09.1949. The colleague Fritz Otto, who was on vacation in his hometown Steinigtwolmsdorf, received on the way to the office from the border population the tip that a known smuggler had crossed the border from Czechoslovakia in the vicinity of the district Sonneberg near Neusalza-Spremberg. Still in civilian clothes, the constable approaches the border crosser and asks him to come with him to the border post. The smuggler attacks the unarmed policeman with a knife, stabs him 16 times and fatally wounds him in the carotid artery. The perpetrator flees, but is later caught and sentenced to life in prison.
