Three ETA terrorists had positioned themselves on the road leading to the Alcalá-Meco prison and shot a passing prison officer when they saw him. He fled, leaving his vehicle unlocked. Shortly after, police vehicles drove up and the terrorists detonated an explosive device they had placed in the prison official's car. The bomb caused the death of Juan Antonio and another police officer, and two other colleagues were injured.
