THE STORY
Circumstances
On Friday 22 January 2021, Jan Smits (GP Helmond) died aged 79.
Jan joined the Helmond GP on 1 October 1961 and, after his uniform service, worked at the detective unit\'s TOHD (Technische Opsporings- en Herkenningsdienst). After the reorganisation into the regional police force Brabant Zuid-Oost, to his great disappointment, this position disappeared and Jan worked administratively at the Helmond East Division until his retirement.
Jan was a board member of the personnel association HPSOV ( Helmondse Politie- en Ontspannings Vereniging) for many years. Part of this was the police carnival association the Bromsnorren, which still exists and provides a party night for the East Brabant police every year. Jan has been prince several times.
