THE STORY
Circumstances
Between September and December 1865, Paris was hit by its first cholera epidemic. Six sergeants de ville (city sergeants) who were helping to organise emergency aid and provide assistance to the sick died, victims themselves of the terrible disease. Their names are inscribed on the monument to the victims of duty at the Préfecture de Police.
