THE STORY
Circumstances
Christian Maréchal is not what is commonly known as a \"victim of duty\" police officer, as he was not on duty at the time. However, his particularly mysterious death and the lack of certainty about any links between his homicide and his profession led us to list him on this site.
On the evening of 21 March, Christian was at home, alone. His wife, a member of the national police force who was also off duty at the time, texted him to pick her up at the end of a UMP meeting in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. At around 8.50pm, he replied \"OK\". But without the usual \"kisses\", which surprised her. He wasn\'t coming. It was a colleague who couldn\'t reach him who discovered the horror scene at around 10.30pm.
It seems that the victim knew her attackers, as she opened the door. Sitting at his desk, Christian was stabbed 18 times. He was then severely beaten as he tried to escape.
The text message may have been sent \"in the presence of the murderer\" or \"written under duress\", according to the widow, who does not rule out any possibility. She also thinks that her suspicious 59-year-old husband must have known his attacker(s), because \"he would never open the door to strangers\". The relentlessness of the perpetrator(s) suggests a crime of hatred or revenge\", said Mrs Maréchal\'s lawyer, Jean-Pierre Versini-Campinchi.
