THE STORY

Circumstances

Robert Zehner died on 27 April at the age of 81. In a statement sent to the editor, the town of Charnay-lès-Mâcon paid tribute to him.
"A Charnaysian at heart, Robert Zehner joined the town council in April 1974 in the technical services department. In particular, he was in charge of road maintenance and public spaces. Around ten years later, he became a police warden, taking over from Claude Charlet, the only police officer to hold this position.
He continued his career as a senior warden, becoming chief brigadier in August 1996. Robert Zehner retired in May 1999, after 25 years of loyal service to the municipality of Charnay.
During all these years, his actions and his personality left their mark on the town he loved so much. Robert Zehner was both rigorous and disciplined, as required by his police duties, which he fulfilled with dedication, but he was also helpful and always available.
Appreciated by all, he was a kind-hearted man who volunteered for the Charnay fire brigade, where he held the rank of corporal. A seasoned sportsman, he took part several times on behalf of the company in the national Cross final, which consisted of a 7 km foot race. His drive and unfailing determination led him to surpass himself both in sport and in life.
After suffering serious health problems from 2000 onwards, he was forced to stop all his activities, but his family, his wife, his two children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his friends and all those who knew him will remember him as a good man, with intact values that he was able to share and pass on".
