He died on the night of November 1 in a tragic traffic accident while on duty.

That night, the patrol car manned by Assistant Chief Coordinator Scarpati and the driver (a 35-year-old police officer) was traveling along the road running alongside the Santa Maria La Bruna train station, near Torre del Greco (NA), when, for reasons currently under investigation, it collided with an SUV that was traveling at high speed on the same road.

The violent impact hurled the patrol car down the embankment adjacent to the railroad tracks. The patrol chief died instantly, thrown from the vehicle; the driver was hospitalized in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV, which was carrying six people, fled the scene. He was apprehended a few hours later.

Assistant Chief Coordinator Scarpati was on duty at the Torre del Greco Police Station (NA). He is survived by his wife and three children. Ironically, he had agreed to fill in for a colleague that night.
