THE STORY
Circumstances of death
On August 16, 1940, a group of at least five Dublin Castle detectives, led by Detective Sergeant Patrick McKeown, conducted a search in Dublin. After gaining entry to the premises, the officers were surprised by an exchange of gunfire. Detective Garda Hyland was killed instantly. Detective Sergeant McKeown succumbed to his wounds on August 17, 1940. Another member, Detective Garda Brady, was seriously wounded.
