THE STORY
Circumstances of death
On January 8, 1933, a man fell into the river at George's Quay in Cork. Garda McCarthy and two local men were the first to arrive on the scene in a small rowboat. During the course of the rescue operation, Garda McCarthy and two local men managed to retrieve the person into the boat. However, while transferring the casualty to a larger motorboat, the boat overturned in the strong current and all four occupants were thrown into the water. With the help of others present, rescue boats were sent out and all but Garda McCarthy, who was a good swimmer, were successfully rescued. His body was recovered a short time later.
